Tesla

So the question is, "Is Tesla coming to India?"

So, the answer to this question is "Yes". Yes, Tesla is expected to enter the Indian car market with 4 of its models which are the Tesla Model STesla Model 3Tesla Model Y, and Tesla Model X.

The other luxury car manufacturers like Mercedes and Audi have already launched their electric vehicles in the Indian car market. Tesla CEO and co-founder Elon Musk said they are also looking to set up a factory in India only if Tesla's imported cars get a good response in India.

Tesla was seen testing its Model 3 car on the Indian roads in the year 2021. But strong steps are yet to be taken to finally give the Indian fans Tesla cars. The delay is happening because of the import duty issue between Elon Musk and the government of India.

Many state ministers have called Tesla to manufacture and open Tesla plants in their state. In the month of November 2021, the union minister for road transport and highways, Nitin Gadkari said that the cars of tesla could cost somewhere around 35 lakh in the Indian car market.

It is just the import duties that are restricting Tesla to enter the Indian car market but the ministers seem to be favouring Tesla. In Mumbai, Tesla has already got their corporate office and they have also secured an office in Bengaluru and are looking for compatible executives to start their operations.

The import duties are creating such a big fuss because in India the rate of import duties are 100% on cars that have a price of more than $ 40,000. And the cars that have a price tag below $ 40,000 are subject to a 60% import tax rate.

Elon Musk also seems to be interested in the Indian car market as he said "Hopeful that there will be a temporary tariff relief for electric vehicles. that would be much appreciated.".

Elon Musk is very active on Twitter and he has seen to be answering many queries related to Tesla in India. Recently when a Twitter user asked him a question related to local assembly for Tesla cars, Elon Musk replied by tweeting "If Tesla is able to succeed in imported vehicles, then a factory in India is quite likely.".

Conclusion

The conclusion is that Tesla has demand in India, The ministers of India are also in favour of Tesla, and the CEO and co-founder of Tesla Elon Musk is also interested in the Indian car market. The only problem is the high rate of import duties on imported cars, so in one way or another if Tesla succeeds in overcoming the challenge of import duties then it is safe to say that a local assembly plant of Tesla in India is not a long walk.
