THAR, this car needs no introduction. We are watching Thar running on the streets since forever, many of us find Thar cool, and many of us think Thar is outdated. But one thing is for sure is that it catch our eyes at least for a second.
Now as Mahindra has launched the new Thar, the people who used to think that Thar is outdated definitely got a second thought after looking at its well-designed exterior.
The Mahindra Thar has its' own character and feeling, whoever drives a Thar get's his personality build up in the eyes of the public too.
Thar has been used by many authoritative peoples whether in villages or cities, If the Thar is running on the street the other cars will leave the space for it by themselves.
So that is the Thar for India, let's see some of the highlights of the new Thar:-
- 4 star global NCAP safety rating.
- Classic Thar design in a new avatar.
- Manual and Automatic transmission options are available.
- 2.0-liter mStallionTGDipetrol engine and 2.2-liter mHawk CRDe diesel engine.
Design: -
- The all-new Mahindra Thar displays a very modern look with the presence of the classic Thar style as well. the new thar is carved in a boxy shape with retro style body panels and 2 door body style.
- The new thar uses the ladder frame and is based on Mahindra Gen 3 platform which is the same platform that is used in Mahindra Scorpio.
- The new Thar comes in 3 roof options which are Soft-top, Hard-top, and a Removable Hard-top. from our research we have found that the Hard-top version is very comfortable as it cancels the wind noise and gives you a quiet and pleasant riding experience, although at high speed the wind noise will be hearable even with the Hard-top.
- If we talk about the soft top, many youngsters are gonna like it as it is convertible but the process to open up the roof will take a practice of just a few minutes as it is very well engineered.
- The length of the new Thar is 3,985 mm, width 1,820 mm (for AX variant) and 1,855 mm (for LX variant), height is 1920 mm and 1,844 for hard-top variant, wheelbase is 2,450 mm, front and rear track is 1520 mm, and the seating capacity offered is of 4-seater (2+2).
- If you are someone who is gonna use the Thar for Hardcore offroading, then we would like to tell you that the new Thar has a Ground clearance of 219 mm (for AX variant) and 226 (for LX variant), Approach angle is 41.2 degrees (for AX variant) and 41.8 degrees (for LX variant), Ramp-over angle is 26.2 degrees (for AX variant) and 27 degrees (for LX variant), Departure angle of 36 degrees (for AX variant) and 36.8 degrees (for LX variant), and the Water Wading depth is of 650 mm.
Interior: -
- The new Thar has taken a leap forward from the preceding Thar, the cabin of the new Thar is now equipped with various fancy and modern technology features that were not present in the previous version of the Thar.
- Let's talk about the seats first, seats are good and comfortable and give you a high and commanding driving position, you may also feel while sitting sitting on the front seat that there is not much space between you and the windshield, but you can get very good visibility of the entire bonnet from those seats.
- What we didn't like is that there is no armrest for the front seats as well as for the rear. now talking about the back seats, the back seats are wide enough for 2 adults to be comfortably seated.
- While seating at the back seats, you experience a decent amount of headroom and legroom but the front seat rails don't leave much of the space for the foot, on the brighter side the backrest reclines to a comfortable position and the rear headrest gives a decent and comfortable riding experience.
- One uniques thing is that the controls for the power windows are not on the doors, they are now on the center console near the cup holder. the reason for that is said to be that the doors are detachable.
- Now let's take a look at the Dashboard and the Steering wheel, both are very well finished and the quality is satisfactory. apart from that, you get multifunction controls like audio control, phone control, change track, manage calls, and cruise control on the steering wheel.
- On the dashboard, you get a 7.0-inch touch screen that provides connectivity with the Android Auto and Apple Car Play. You get various information on this screen like vital stats and other information through the adventure statistics display with power gauges, torque gauges, compass, and a roll and pitch meter, tyre pressure monitoring system, and notifications of the adventure events. apart from that, you will also get to see the Thar badging on the dashboard which will make you proud of the car.
- The interior is IP 54 certified dust and waterproof, and you also get drain valves to drain the water from the cabin. around the touch screen, Mahindra has given a waterproof sheath to protect it from water and dust.
- On the inside, you get a music system of 4 speakers and 2 tweeters, the quality of the music system is above average and has a good scope of improvement.
- There were a few things that could create some problems, the very first thing is that climbing to the backseats are hard, to get to the backseat you need to squeeze your stomach and bend your back.
- Some screws in the back leave a scratch when your hand accidentally gets moved above them, and in the automatic, we think the work needs to be done to provide a comfortable foot space for the driver's left foot.
Performance: -
- In terms of performance, the new Mahindra Thar is not going to disappoint you, it comes with a 2.0-liter mStallionTGDipetrol engine and a 2.2-liter mHawk CRDe diesel engine, with a 6 Speed Manual and a 6 Speed Torque Converter Automatic.
- The 2.0-liter mStallionTGDipetrol engine produces 150 bhp @ 5000 rpm, maximum torque of 300 Nm @ 1250-3000 rpm (with Manual transmission) and 320 Nm @ 1500-3000 rpm (with Automatic Transmission).
- For offroading, you get a Transfer Case configuration of Manual shift Part-Time 4WD with high and low reduction gears, the front and rear axels are Semi Floating with 4.3:1 final drive, and you get steering configuration of Rack and Pinion Hydraulic power steering.
- Let's talk about the Petrol engine first, the petrol engine runs very smoothly and very quietly, it is a potent powerhouse for the new Mahindra Thar and gives a powerful yet mostly vibration-free ride.
- The diesel engine is also a very well-performing powerhouse, it is responsive, powerful, gives a good ride quality, and whatnot, although at high speed we found the petrol engine more refined than the diesel engine.
- One thing we would like to share is that in our research, we have found that the people have experienced that the brakes in the diesel engine variant are not as good as the brakes in petrol engine variant.
- Let's take a look at the handling. the steering feels a little stiff on the tarmac probably because of the Ceat all-terrain tyres, while around the corner you feel a lot of body roll that can be because the SUV is quite heavy and is carved in a boxy shape opposite to the Aero-dynamics.
Brakes & Suspensions: -
- The new Mahindra Thar uses 2 types of tyres, the first is 245/75 R16 Tubeless All-Terrain tyres (for AX variant) and 255/65 R18 Tubeless All-Terrain tyres (for LX variant).
- To stop those tyres, the new Mahindra Thar uses a 303 mm disc brake system for the front and a 282 mm drum brake system for the rear.
- The brake specification that the new Mahindra Thar uses is Vaccum Assisted Dual Hydraulic Circuit with Tandem Master Cylinder.
- Now let's take a look at the suspensions, the New Mahindra Thar uses Independent Double Wishbone Front Suspension with Coil-Over Damper and Stabiliser Bar.
- And for the rear, the car uses Multilink Solid Rear Axle with Coil Spring and Stabiliser Bar.
Safety: -
- In the new Thar, Mahindra has not compromised on safety.
- As we all know the 4 seaters Thar has already scored 4 stars in Global NCAP, we would also like to inform you that as per our research on the internet, Mahindra had also introduced a 6 seater version but as it did not perform well in Global NCAP Mahindra decided to discontinue it and continue to manufacture 4 seater version only.
- So from that one thing is sure, Mahindra is very serious about their customer's safety and not gonna compromise on that.
- Let's take a look at what safety features we get with the Thar: -
- Equipped with Electronic Stability Program (ESP) and Anti-Lock Braking System (ABS).
- In the new Thar, you get a Built-in roll case that provides protection to the cabin in case your car rollover.
- You get dual airbags for the driver and co-passenger to provide protection in case of a car crash.
- ISOFIX child seats mount is something given for your kids' safety when you take them on adventures too.
- And the parking sensors help you to park your SUV safely without scratching it on some wall.
- Some other Safety features are: -
- Anti-Theft Alarm.
- Panic Braking Signal.
- 3 Point Seat Belts for Rear Passengers.
- Passenger Airbag Deactivation Switch.
- Speed Sensing Front Door Locks.
- Vehicle Over-speed Warning.
- Seat Belt Reminder.
- Snow Chain Provision for Tyres.
Review: -
- First, let's talk about its looks, the car looks amazing and makes random people turn their heads and gives you thumbs up on the road.
- The plastic used around the car, and in the car looks of good quality and the designers of Mahindra have carved everything with style even the screws give a good look in the cabin.
- The New Mahindra Thar is an amazing car and much more advance than its predecessors. the car is fun to drive but to give it toughness, the manufacturer has used the ladder frame which gives the car toughness but not comforts like other Compact urban SUVs.
- While Driving it, the performance is good and even on the offroad this car is unstoppable, so it gets flying on that.
- You can feel the bumpy ride in the Thar but what we like in it are low vibration on the steering and cabin and a very refined and quiet riding experience.
- The car gives enough sitting space to fit 4 adults in the car, but for the long journey, it is not recommended.
- One thing which made us sad is that there is no armrest in the car on the seat, and another thing is that there is no parking camera option available with any variant which is very useful in SUVs.
- We very much appreciate that the interior is waterproof and washable and Thar also has drain plugs in the cabin to drain the water, but a concern is that the floor and pedals can get slippery when they are wet.
- The body roll is a matter of concern but it is also justifiable looking at the tough, heavy, and rigid SUV.
- The Thar is not a practical SUV but more of a fun-to-drive vehicle that does its job very well as an offroader.
- One thing we are very much amazed at is that the new Mahindra Thar does not have white as a color option.
Conclusion: -
- The new Mahindra Thar is a very capable off-roader and does everything well that we can expect from an offroader, you can also use it in the city and you will get a lot of attention for that.
- Although if you are a family man and needs a comfortable car for your family, we will suggest you should check other compact SUV's like XUV 300, if you are a young man and love to live your life every day then you should definitely make the new Mahindra Thar your companion.
